A capacity, and taste, for reading, gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others. It is the key, or one of the keys, to the already solved problems. And not only so. It gives a relish, and facility, for successfully pursuing the [yet] unsolved ones.
-Abraham Lincoln

matt1I am a Christian, husband, father, and Emergency Physician.  I have always read because I have to.  But several years ago I discovered the joy of reading because I want to.  I discovered the joy of learning new things and broadening my understanding of the world.

I am not inherently a lover of books.  Honestly, I would rather be doing a project or working with my hands.  But during my training as a doctor, I realized that I am ultimately responsible for learning what I know and that no-one is obligated to teach me things.  This realization opened my mind to the world of information that can be known if only I look for it.  This, coupled with the desire to be educated enough about topics of interest so that I could have an intelligent conversation have prompted me to consume books.

This site is a catalog of the books that I have consumed.  It is an inventory the the various works that have shaped my thinking on topics ranging from history to politics and to faith.  I hope that by reading these summaries that you too are inspired to read.
